House of Birds

Crystal Palace W1

Sebastian Bergne’s creation Crystal Palace is part of the exhibition House of Birds at the Triennale di Milano during this years Milan furniture fair. Twenty-four well-known Italian and foreign designers, were invited to meet one challenge: to design a birdhouse. They were free to express and experiment their own vision through functions, forms, colours, and finishes.

Integrating a bird house into its environment was important in Sebastian’s approach to the project. Not only should it try and disappear into nature from the birdwatcher’s perspective, but from the birds point of view it should offer protection from the elements and an opportunity to build a nest in as normal a way as possible.

The perforated glass dome allows it to be customised with twigs from the host tree. The bird then continues the nest construction using whatever materials it chooses.
