Sebastian Bergne’s design for a Tomb of the Past has won first prize in the Monumental Masonry competition and exhibition at Sir John Soane’s Museum, London.
The competition, curated by Bompas & Parr, invited Architects and Designers to submit proposals for epic monuments in a magnificent celebration of death. 24 projects were shortlisted from the 120 entries and the top ten were made in model form to be exhibited.
Sebastian’s winning design represents a doorway between past and future. The spiritual symbol of a column is transformed into an arch, a threshold and symbol of strength. The result is a mix of the familiar and unknown where the pedestal becomes the capitol and the classical becomes surreal. In short a fragile moment in the present where we need to look both backward and forward at the same time.
The top 10 shortlisted models were auctioned by Christies with the proceeds split between the museum and the charity Maggie’s, who offer support for those affected by cancer.
